Sri Lanka. 26 May 2011. At least 15 soldiers suspected to have contracted dengue fever had been admitted to the Army Hospital in Narahenpita, chief medical officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr Pradeep Kariyawasam revealed. He said that nearly 100 soldiers suffering from fever are presently warded in the Army Hospital of which 15 were believed to be suffering from dengue.

(Mangalore, Karnataka state). 26 May 2011. A team of district health officials visited the migrant workers' colony at Lingappayyakadu near [Mulki], following reports in the media about possible outbreak of dengue. District health and family welfare officer Dr O R Srirangappa said that 5 persons in [one house] and 2[in another] in Lingappayyakadu were suspected of being dengue. They are receiving treatment in hospitals in Mangalore and Mulki.

Puerto Rico. 25 May 2011. According to the most recent numbers, last week (15-20 May 2011), 42 suspected dengue cases were registered. As of last week, 1332 suspected dengue cases were registered. Last year [2010] 3495 cases were reported for the same dates. Nonetheless, in the 1st 3 weeks of May of the current year [2011], 132 suspected cases were registered. According to data from the Weekly Dengue Surveillance of the CDC, as of 29 Apr 2011, most (62 percent) of the confirmed cases have been dengue [virus] type 1, followed by dengue [virus] type 4 (38 percent). To date, the other 2 dengue virus serotypes, 2 and 3, have not been detected.

Brazil (Tambau, Sao Paulo state). 28 May 2011. Tambau, in the central region of Sao Paulo state, has now registered 245 dengue cases this year [2011], the greatest number in the history of the municipality. The city faces an epidemic and, this week, there were 87 new [cases] confirmed. This situation is worrisome since in 2010 there were [only] 32 cases.

- Brazil (Sorocaba, Sao Paulo state). 24 May 2011. Within 2 weeks, Sorocaba may reach a dengue epidemic situation if the disease progresses at the same rate. According to the bulletin released by the Secretariat of Health, the number of [dengue virus] infected patients in the municipality now totals 1499. - Brazil (Campinas, Sao Paulo state). 23 May 2011. The number of positive dengue cases in the city increased by 61 percent, going from 325 to 525 confirmed cases. There are 1600 reported cases with 754 [still] awaiting confirmatory test results. The number will increase considerably on completion of these tests. The city faces a dengue epidemic and Epidemiologic Surveillance is now considering the circulation of 2 [types of dengue] viruses. - Brazil (Ceara state).

28 May 2011. The state Secretariat of Health (SESA) says that the dengue epidemic is under control. SESA confirmed an additional 2874 cases and 2 deaths in the state. From January -yesterday [27 May 2011], Ceara recorded 23 231 dengue cases with 43 deaths, with 10 from DHF and 33 from dengue with complications. The 2 new deaths were in Fortaleza, both from dengue with complications.Another 33 are under investigation. - Brazil (Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro state). 26 May 2011. The suspected dengue cases in Angra dos Reis continue to increase. According to data from the state Secretariat of Health, as of the 20th epidemiological week of 2011 (2 Jan-21 May 2011), 2577 suspected dengue cases were reported in the Angra municipality. Just in the month of May, 18 cases were registered in 9 days. The last survey made from January-12 May [2011] stated that in the city 2577 suspected [dengue] cases were counted. Of this total, 331 were confirmed as classical dengue fever, 21 [dengue] with complications with one death.

Brazil (Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro State). 24 May 2011. Since the most recent announcement of the number of dengue cases, this Friday [20 May 2011], when an epidemic state was declared in the municipality, 181 new cases were reported, causing the dengue [case] statistics to jump from 3431 to 3612. Brazil (Rio de Janeiro state). 26 May 2011. So far in 2011, some 80 people died [of dengue] and 107 227 were diagnosed with dengue in Rio de Janeiro [state], according to the latest report of the State Secretariat of Health. This bulletin stated that the Rio de Janeiro municipality, capital of the state, registered the most deaths with 30. This report indicated that in the 1st 3 weeks of May, 11 232 suspected dengue cases were reported. However, it indicated that the peak of the disease occurred this past April [2011], when 41 682 possible [dengue cases] were registered.

- Brazil (Lagoa da Prata, Minas Gerais state). 26 May 2011. In Lagoa da Prata, dengue cases have decreased 99 percent compared to the 1st 6 months of 2010. In 2010, 2695 dengue cases were reported by the Secretariat of Health during this critical period of disease spread. Of these, 1574 were confirmed through laboratory tests. In 2011, from January - today [26 May 2011], 85 cases were reported and just 15 confirmed as dengue [virus infections].

- Brazil (Alagoas state). 25 May 2011. The [state Secretariat of Health - SESAU] epidemiological bulletin shows that the reported number of [dengue] cases reached 5810 from January-23 [May 2011] with 5 confirmed dengue deaths. SESAU issued an alert, however, that 24 municipalities [in the state] are on [dengue] alert with the incidence rate above 100 but less than 300 [cases per 100 000 population]. Thenumber of municipalities in an epidemic situation in Alagoas increased by 9, according to the latest SESAU epidemiological bulletin. However, even with the increased number of municipalities in an epidemicsituation, over the past 6 weeks the number of reported [dengue] cases continues to decline.

Brazil (Parana state). 24 May 2011. The weekly dengue bulletin issued by the Secretariat of Health, registered 21 902 confirmed cases of the disease [dengue] in Parana as of Friday 20 [May 2011]. Of the399 municipalities in the state, 52 are in a dengue alert situation because they have more than 100 cases per 100 000 population (incidence above 100), with 32 reaching more than 300 cases per 100 000 population. Most of the municipalities on alert are in the north of Parana. The number of deaths remains at 14.[in Portuguese,
